What is involved in terms of converting a Peugeot Traveller, a Volkswagen Caddy or Chrysler Pacifica to a PARAVAN; who are they suitable for?

The PARAVAN M conversion is ideal for front passengers in a wheelchair and families with disabled children.
The basic models are as follows: VW Caddy, Chrysler Pacifica, Ford Tourneo Connect or the Peugeot Traveller. The refit as a whole includes the following:

  • Lowered vehicle floor (20 cm lower) with integrated ramp compartment
  • Underfloor ramp with user handle; dirt and splash-resistant
  • Non-slip coating for underfloor ramp
  • New fuel tank made from high-quality aluminium, fitted at rear of vehicle
  • Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) side skirts
  • Adaptation of original exhaust system (stainless steel)
  • Adaptation of rear seats, non-removable
  • Intensive corrosion protection (zinc undercoat, paint, cavity sealing, underfloor protection)
  • Sound-proofing mats on vehicle floor
  • Velours interior
  • Every conversion includes all the relevant TÜV tests (MOT equivalent) and a full manufacturer’s warranty.

The PARAVAN E conversion is designed especially for independent drivers. A refit designed to accommodate a wheelchair is based on a VW Caddy, Chrysler Pacifica, Ford Tourneo Connect or the Peugeot Traveller. The refit as a whole includes the following:

  • Lowered vehicle floor (some 20 cm lower) with integrated ramp compartment
  • Electric underfloor ramp; dirt and splash-resistant
  • Release device for manual operation of underfloor ramp
  • Non-slip coating for underfloor ramp
  • Electric floor lowering with logistics control (normal version)
  • Electric sliding door, with original functions retained (manual activation, child-proof locks)
  • New fuel tank made from high-quality aluminium, fitted at rear of vehicle
  • Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) side skirts
  • Adaptation of original exhaust system (stainless steel)
  • Adaptation of rear seats, fixed installation and movable
  • Intensive corrosion protection (zinc undercoat, paint, cavity sealing, underfloor protection)
  • Sound-proofing mats on vehicle floor
  • Velours interior
  • Every conversion includes all the relevant TÜV tests (MOT equivalent) and a full manufacturer’s warranty.

Is it possible to adapt my PARAVAN if my condition deteriorates?

Yes. Our modular system makes it possible to replace a wide variety of controls. Often it is just a case of adjusting the settings in line with physical or functional changes.

I use a PARAVAN designed for a front passenger. My clinical condition has improved. Is it possible to carry out a refit on my car and turn it into a vehicle for an independent driver?

Of course. The great versatility of the conversion system means a refit is possible at any time.

How many other wheelchair users can I accommodate in the PARAVAN?

As an independent driver in a wheelchair, you can also accommodate three other passengers in wheelchairs.

How can I manoeuvre myself so I am directly behind the steering wheel in my PARAVAN without any help from others?

You open the electric sliding door via remote control and extend the underfloor ramp. Given that the vehicle floor is 20 cm lower and the vehicle is automatically lowered when the ramp is extended, the wheelchair user only has to negotiate a much smaller angle when accessing the vehicle. This makes it easy for you to get behind the steering wheel.

I do not have a disabled parking space. Is it possible to extend the ramp only partially and set it down on the pavement?

Yes. The underfloor ramp integrated into the vehicle floor can be extended partially or in full and automatically adjusts to any surface.

Is there still sufficient ground clearance once the vehicle floor has been lowered?

Yes, the dimensions comply with the relevant provisions. There will still be sufficient ground clearance. The many happy PARAVAN customers in Austria, Switzerland, and Bavaria, where the beautiful Alpine views don’t always go hand-in-hand with neatly tarred road surfaces, would appear to confirm this. We also offer the option of raising the front axle.

What are the benefits of a diesel automatic PARAVAN?

Your disability badge means you are exempt from road tax, you will be using the cheapest form of fuel, and the new common rail technology will ensure your consumption is very economical.

How can I learn how to control my PARAVAN in any situation?

The best way is to take one of our driving safety courses, which are proving increasingly popular. You can do this at our own driving safety track or at various trade fairs.

Which costs are borne by the funding agencies and public bodies and what do I need to pay for myself?

In principle, there are subsidies and loans available to help people gain their driving licence and purchase a car, subject to certain conditions. Subsidies are also potentially available for reconfiguration work to suit users with disabilities, which includes installation, technical inspection, and restoration of technical functionality. You can download the comprehensive ‘Mut zur Mobilität’ (courage to embrace mobility) advice guide from the Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung (society for technical supervision - GTÜ) here for free as a PDF document.

Does the vehicle warranty still apply after the conversion?

Yes, because we are an authorised partner of the automotive industry. You will be given all the relevant documentation when your vehicle is delivered.

Can I continue using a manual gearbox in my car as a wheelchair user?

Yes, this is possible. We can convert your basic vehicle to accommodate this individual requirement.

Do I have to come to PARAVAN for every maintenance or repair job?

No, we have a comprehensive network of licence partners in Germany and many service partners across Europe. These partner companies are in constant touch with the head office in Aichelau.

Does fuel consumption tend to increase following a conversion?

No. The opposite is true, since the vehicle structure is even improved with many conversions, helping you save fuel.

What vehicles are suitable for me as a wheelchair user?

Conversions based on the Volkswagen Caddy, Chrysler Pacifica, Hyundai H1, Ford Tourneo Connect / Costum, Mercedes V-Class, Mercedes Sprinter, Volkswagen T6 are ideal for independent drivers and front passengers. However, we have also refitted countless other vehicles to the complete satisfaction of our customers. From sporty runarounds to mobile homes.

Who can help me with TÜV (MOT) and driving licence issues?

Our specialist advisers would be happy to help of course. They will do everything they can to help you get your own vehicle.

Do I need a driving licence if I want to drive a car as a wheelchair user?

You will need to undergo a driving aptitude assessment as per Section 11 of the Fahrerlaubnisverordnung (driving licence regulations). We can arrange this for you.

Will I also need a new wheelchair for my new car?

No, we always ensure we adapt our vehicles to the respective needs of the individual.

Can I drive unaccompanied or does someone else need to be with me?

In principle, you can drive all PARAVAN converted vehicles unaccompanied. Ultimately, your doctor and an officially recognised expert from the Deutscher Kraftfahrzeug-Überwachungs-Verein (German Motor Vehicle Inspection Association – DEKRA) or the Technischer Überwachungs-Verein (technical inspection association – TÜV) will decide whether you need to be accompanied.
