Pfronstetten-Aichelau/ Hockenheim, 17th October 2019. For the season finale of the DMV Gran Turismo and Touring Car Cup (DMV GTC) on October 18th / 19th at the Hockenheimring the Audi R8 LMS GT3 - equipped with the steer-by-wire-system "Space Drive" - will drive for the first time in the classification. Already in June, the technology carrier of Schaeffler Paravan Technologie GmbH & Co.KG, which does not require any mechanical connection between steering unit and steering gear, was the first racing car to receive approval from the German Motor Sport Association (DMSB). The racing car is maintained by Phoenix-Racing and driven by former Formula 1 driver Markus Winkelhock.
"Being able to compete in the classification is another important milestone in the project for us. Over the past three race weekends we have been able to gain important insights that flow directly into the further development of the system. The steering column will fall", says Roland Arnold, CEO of Schaeffler Paravan Technologie GmbH & Co.KG, "and we will be able to offer road-approved drive-by-wire technology for this application, which among other things is a key technology for autonomous driving in levels 4 and 5".
"The use of the steer-by-wire Audi R8 LMS GT3 enhances the series enormously and makes it fit for further future technologies in the automotive industry," says Ralph Monschauer, organizer of the DMV GTC, which will take place five times next year as part of the DTM supporting program. "The interest in the project is very high. The performance and reliability of the steer-by-wire GT3 in the last races convinced us".
