Selection of completed industry projects

Prototypes, experimental vehicles, small-batch production for the automotive future

This page gives you an overview of the industry projects that Paravan has completed. The variety of projects we showcase here demonstrates the flexibility and variability of our adaptive system solutions in the field of drive-by-wire and steer-by-wire systems and in the construction of experimental vehicles and prototypes for semi-automated or fully automated driving.

Steer-by-wire technology carrier AUDI R8 LMS GT3

This test carrier is the first steer-by-wire racing car approved by the DMSB. The steering column has been completely removed. The actuator sits on the steering gear. The vehicle was designed for the future development and industrialisation of the Space-Drive system and is equipped with the latest steer-by-wire technology SpaceDrive II. The aim is to expose the system to extreme conditions during races in order to draw important conclusions about possible technical improvements. The steering system has no steering column and works with the force feedback steering unit while maintaining all original functions.

Four AUDI Q7s for China

We equipped four Audi Q7s in China with our fail-safe and street-legal Space Drive drive-by-wire system. The main module was neatly installed in the vehicle interior, and a back-up battery system for the secondary power supply was also integrated.

Drive-by-wire project in Singapore

In this project, we fitted two minibuses built on the Toyota platform with our Space Drive 2 drive-by-wire system. The vehicles can drive autonomously with the help of sensors and intelligent driving systems linked via CAN interfaces. The vehicles can also be operated manually using the drive-by-wire system. Secondary functions (lights, turn signals...) are operated via the Paravan Gateway.

Autonomous VAN future study

In this future study by Daimler AG, we equipped the vehicle with state-of-the-art drive-by-wire technology made by Paravan. As a result, the vehicle can be controlled via joystick or, if desired, operate autonomously.

Steer-by-wire test with test vehicle

We integrated our Space Drive steer-by-wire solution into a test and experimental vehicle for ZF Friedrichshafen. We also provided a defined CAN interface, which offers an advantage in that there are no restrictions in the control and regulating function.

Adas vehicle for Visteon

We integrated our systems for primary and secondary vehicle functions into an Adas vehicle. Our drive-by-wire system controls acceleration, braking and steering. The interfaces used are 2 x CAN, which we customised and provided with personalised access rights. Via another CAN interface, we can select the secondary functions of turn signals, lights and windscreen wipers via our configuration tool.

Show car for the IAA in Frankfurt

We participated in a project for a leading car manufacturer, culminating in the creation of a self-driving show car that was presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) in 2018. The vehicle study was equipped with our digital and fail-safe Space Drive technology, and the Paravan drive-by-wire system was also expanded to include a remote function. The concept car demonstrates how autonomous driving could make car sharing even easier and more convenient and economical in future. This vision of urban mobility in the future is the most radical car sharing concept car of all: It’s fully autonomous with maximum communication, and it’s also friendly, fully customizable and, of course, electric.

Autonomous technology in the smallest of spaces

A small fleet of Renault Twizzys was converted and equipped with state-of-the-art redundant Paravan Space Drive drive-by-wire technology. None of the modifications can be seen in the interior. At the push of a button, however, the Twizzys can switch to an autonomous driving mode.

High-end test vehicle for autonomous driving in Austria

We incorporated the latest autonomous driving technology into a Jeep Grand Cherokee. In future, the experimental vehicle will be used to display a wide range of steering and driving scenarios up to and including Level 5 autonomous driving. For this purpose, we integrated our Space Drive digital steer-by-wire and drive-by-wire system into the vehicle. We also installed sensors and linked them to our system via specially programmed interfaces.

Project: Showcar OEM 2016 with Space Drive

Paravan contributed its fail-safe Space Drive II drive-by-wire system to the development of an autonomous/semi-autonomous show car for a major German automotive group. Space Drive technology, which meets the most stringent requirements as defined in the ISO 26262 safety standard (ASIL D), ensures redundant control of the primary functions of acceleration, braking and steering. The forward-looking vehicle study – which was developed to celebrate a company anniversary – can make its way through traffic fully independently by means of sensor-controlled operation. Should the driver wish to take control of the vehicle, a futuristic steering wheel without a steering column folds out of the instrument panel, and the driver can use this device to enter steering commands “by-wire” (wired).

Semi-autonomous project "SAM-Car"

Is it really possible to drive a Corvette ZR06 simply by moving one’s head? Sam Schmidt, a former Indy-car driver who became a paraplegic when he had a severe accident during a race, says yes you can. Ultramodern technology from the USA and Germany makes it possible. In a cooperative project by the US electronics experts at Arrow Industries and the Swabian drive-by-wire specialists at Paravan, a Corvette ZR06 is converted and reconstructed so that Sam Schmidt can control the 650-HP racing car safely around a racetrack by means of minute head movements.

Project OLLI: self-propelled minibus

In a joint project of different partners under the leadership of the US company Local Motors located in Phoenix, the self-propelled vehicle project 'Olli' became a reality and was presented to the public in Washington on June 17 th , 2016 . 'Olli' is a self-propelled (autonomous) mini bus for future passenger transport in urban areas (airports, industrial sites, amusement parks, railway stations) that can accommodate up to 12 people comfortably.

Electric mobility with high-tech Force Feedback Steering

Based on a Roding Roadster prototype with electric drive and fail-safe steer-by-wire steering system, force feedback function was realized in a joint project (inter alia, Siemens). Concerning the steering operation, the steering signals are digitized and forwarded to the Paravan Space Drive system. From there, the signals go failsafe (fail operational) continue to servomotors that are installed directly on the steering gear. A mechanical steering column is no longer necessary.

Car of the future Rinspeed "XChange"

The Swiss automotive visionary, Frank M. Rinderknecht shows the way things are heading for automated driving in his latest study, "XChange". The electric vehicle with Space Drive technology is fascinating as one drives totally relaxed whilst the car negotiates the road safely and independently. Steer yourself – no problem. The digital steering wheel can be operated from the driver's seat or from the passenger seat. A hand movement is all it takes to change the position.
