Anyone who drives a car with a joystick, accelerator-brake slider or handheld device may occasionally lack a third hand to quickly and, above all, safely operate the turn signal, windshield wiper or other secondary functions of the vehicle. To prevent this from happening, there is the so-called multifunctional rotary knob, a small but important accessory that allows the driver to keep everything under control despite having a hand on the steering wheel. On the one hand, he can safely operate the steering, but at the same time he can also control the most important secondary vehicle functions at the touch of a button, such as turn signals, horn, lights, windshield wipers or even cruise control. And all this without having to take their hand off the steering wheel.
Since this year, PARAVAN GmbH has this important accessory - the PARAVAN MultiMote - in its own product portfolio. "With this device, we want to address customers who, for example, use so-called light steering, usually in combination with a handheld device for accelerator and brake or an accelerator-brake slider," says Joachim Glück, responsible for technical consulting at PARAVAN GmbH. "Customers who have to live with limitations on one side of their body - for example, due to an amputation or a stroke - also depend on the multifunctional rotary knob."
The MultiMote can be used to operate a wide range of secondary functions at the touch of a button, such as turn signals, horn, windshield wipers, hazard warning lights, or low and high beams. For even more flexibility, the buttons can be assigned twice by pressing them long or short. A special feature is the freely programmable additional key "A". Depending on the vehicle type, the key can be used, for example, to activate cruise control, the rain sensor or voice control. The key commands entered are implemented without any time delay. In addition, the control keypad can be rotated.
The device is connected to the car via a special radio link (2.4 GHz). The connection to the vehicle electronics is possible via a CAN or LIN interface or analog. The multifunction steering wheel knob is attached via a classic ball lock bolt and steering wheel clamp or by mounting it on the horn plate. This allows functions of the assistance systems that are related to the steering wheel to be retained.
In addition to mounting on the steering wheel, the MultiMote can also be used in combination with a handheld device (push = brake, pull = accelerator). "This means the device offers significantly more flexibility to customers whose finger functionality is limited on the left side," says customer consultant Glück.
In addition to brand diversity, the development of an own product also brings a degree of independence from suppliers, also with regard to the procurement of spare parts.
